Summer Themes for Seedlings & Sprouts

This year, campers will explore their senses through lots of fun and educational ways!

See below for our weekly themes. It’s such a fun way to spend the summer - having fun and learning! What could be better than that?

  • Week 1 - Seeing is Believing

Sight – A wonderful gift all creatures have, yet we “see” the world in different ways.  We will spend this week exploring how other creatures see, and with our own eyes, we will explore colors, shapes and patterns in nature.

  • Week 2 - Stop and Smell the Roses

Smell – A unique sense that gives us a lot of information about our surroundings, yet we often overlook its value.  We will spend this week searching out the wonderful scents and powerful odors that nature has to offer, and we will discover why some things smell good and why some things smell bad.

  • Week 3 - Do You Hear What I Hear?

Hearing – Our amazing ears allow us to process our surroundings in order to find things, know when danger is approaching, and even give us enjoyment as we listen to the soothing sounds of nature.  We will spend this week exploring this unique sense and learn how to detect things in nature we never thought we could!

  • Week 4 - A Taste of Honey

When we taste things, we set off a myriad of reactions within our brains and body that help us remember the moment, as well as remember what is good or not so good to eat.  Why do animals eat things we can’t?  Why do some animals only have tubes to use as straws for mouths?  Why do some things taste bad?  We will spend this week exploring our unique taste buds and why we have this sense in the first place.

  • Week 5 - Slippery as a Frog

We use our sense of touch so often during the day and we don’t even realize we are using it to give our brains and bodies information about our surroundings.  During this week we will explore touch by feeling things that we can’t see and try to figure out what they are, go on a blindfolded touch walk, and explore why touch is so important to all creatures.

  • Week 6 - Hidden in Plain Sight

Coming back around to the sense of sight, we will explore more about this very important sense than we did in Week 1.  We will go on a blindfolded walk to help us understand how important sight is and how to get around without it, and we will learn about camouflage as a way that creatures stay hidden in order to survive in plain sight!

  • Week 7 - It Makes Sense!

This week is all about reviewing all of the senses we learned about in the previous weeks, and put them all together to help our campers understand just how important having all of our senses intact is to our own survival as fellow creatures on our planet.  Lots of fun activities to do with so many senses! Description goes here
