Fresh Produce at FOG!!

May 26 - 2:04PM

Good afternoon,

I am happy to announce that the Earthman Farm, which is right up the street from us, will be setting up a produce table here at FOG! Miss Liz, Earthman's daughter, is a teacher here and we discussed how nice it would be if parents could come during drop off and pick up times and leave with some fresh veggies and herbs!

Earthman (Dennis), although he cannot claim his farm as "Certified Organic," does use organic methods in growing his vegetables. The veggies brought here will be freshly picked and will still be chock full of important nutrients that often gets lost when produce sits on shelves and in boxes for days.

When we get the table set up here, there will be a price per pound and it will be a self-serve, honor system for buying your veggies. His prices are amazingly low. You can also visit the farm and pick your own veggies when his sign is out stating he is open as you pass by.

Thanks Miss Liz and Dennis, for bringing your healthy goodness to our school! We can't wait to see the table set up soon!

-Miss Deb

IMPORTANT - Schedules for the last couple of weeks

May 26 - 11:04AM

Good morning all,

This time of year it seems like time is passing by at lightning speed and we all can't seem to catch it and slow it down!

I decided to let the Bake Sale drop this week since it was such an intense last week with the play and I didn't want to ask more of parents this week besides Parent Conferences. I hope you all enjoyed speaking with the teachers in conferences and that you are satisfied with the job we have all done with your children this year. We are so thankful for our wonderful parents and awesome kids!

Below you will find some explanations and updates about what is coming until school is out for the summer:

  1. Open House - Our 20th!! It is next Saturday from 11 to 3 - you should all have received the invitations by now in your folders. This day is a fun day for our current families and any new families that would like to spend some time with us. Spread the word and bring as many people as you wish! We always have a fun day - We ask that everyone contribute a little food so we have a great old-fashioned family barbecue, along with a bouncy house, goat walking, games for kids, maple syrup cotton candy, a popcorn machine to snack from all day, classroom tours and displays, music for kids with Miss Nicole from Music Together, and lots of other fun things to do! We will also have a special 8th grade graduation for our two graduates this year at 1 PM. There will be a sign up sheet for food items on the gate by the playground and also one in the Seedlings classroom for you all to fill in.

  2. Don't forget that next Friday is a half day so we can set up for Saturday! Dismissal at 11:30.

  3. Also don't forget that we are closed this Monday in observance of Memorial Day.

  4. FUN WEEK is what we call the final week of school. I have taken a look at the extended forecast so I am scheduling the following (hopefully Mother Nature will cooperate!):

Monday, June 5th - Water Fun Day - All kids will bring bathing suits, sunscreen, towels, change of clothes and water shoes. We will play with water in the playground and the Elementary/Middle kids will also be doing a biological assessment of our stream - finding macro-invertebrates among the rocks, which they love to do!

Tuesday, June 6th - Field Day - The kids participate in fun outdoor games. All kids must wear sneakers - no open toed shoes or sandals that day please!

Wednesday, June 7th - Our annual trip to High Point State Park for all families. We meet there at 10 am and let our kids have fun at the beach together for the day. More information will be sent home about this event.

Thursday, June 8th - Movie Day - The kids pretend they are in a theater and get to chomp on popcorn and drinks while they watch a film together.

Friday, June 9th - Last Day of School / Half Day - Dismissal at 11:30 - Ice Cream Sundae Day - All kids get to build their own sundaes! For any kids with allergies, please send in items for them to eat so they don't feel left out. We also appreciate any donations of ice cream or toppings!

Last but not least - Don't forget to sign up for our Sunflower Camp that begins on June 19th!! Miss Lisa and Miss Melissa will be teaching the kids all kinds of fun lessons and outdoor activities!

Have a lovely day, Miss Deb

A Few Important Items

January 19 - 2:18PM

Good afternoon all,

Here are a few important items to note:

  1. We will be tapping our lovely maple ladies, Aunt Jemima and Mrs. Butterworth, next month when Mother Nature tells us it is time, but until then I would like to begin asking for anyone who has gallon sized WATER jugs to begin bringing them into school. This is a community project here at FOG - we tap the trees and then give various gallons to parents who volunteer (community service hours anyone?) to boil it down into sap. When we finish the project, we combine all of the sap we receive back and have a tasty day of waffles and syrup for all of the children to taste! We won't take gallon sized milk jugs, just water jugs, since no matter how much we try to clean out old milk jugs, an awful smell remains.

  2. I have been notified of three strep cases in the Sprouts classroom this month, so it is now time to let everyone know and keep a close eye on your child for symptoms, which can be fever, headache, sore throat and general malaise. If your child has any of these symptoms, it is best to get a throat culture and then please let me know of any more cases. We always ask for parents to call in with symptoms or diagnoses so that we can keep track of the nasty bugs going around in order to notify you all of contagious diseases.

  3. The Seedlings room is missing a heart shaped rock called a labrydorite. It is blue green in color and shiny. If anyone's child came home with this rock, can you please return it to the classroom?

  4. Miss Jan, our friend, supporter and humane educator, came yesterday to do a program on rats in the Elementary/Middle classroom. She brought with her a cockatiel that needed a home, hoping to introduce it to our two cockatiels we already have, and of course the children decided they wanted to keep her. Reluctantly I agreed, but have to pay $40 for the bird. We had a class meeting and decided to adopt the bird as a class so that all of the students will own a part of her, making them feel more responsible for her care. Each child would have to bring in $3.00 in order to cover the cost. I would prefer that they do something to earn the money at home so they can feel as if "they" paid for the bird, not their parents. We appreciate your help in helping them to feel ownership with a new animal. This applies only to the Elementary/Middle kids.

  5. One of our teachers found an IPhone 4 on the side of the road between the Seedlings parking lot and our regular parking lot. It is unfortunately smashed, but I would like to return it to its proper owner for funeral arrangements.

Have a nice day! Miss Deb

Happy 3 Day Weekend!

January 13 - 4:08PM

Good afternoon to all!

A few items to note:

  1. Don't forget we are closed this coming Monday for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

  2. We began sending home our Valentine's Day chocolate fundraiser information today. We do business with Rose Mountain Chocolatier, a very local, fair trade, organic, etc. chocolate company right here in Vernon! I think her chocolate is the best, to be quite honest. Go visit her on Rt. 638, right off of Rt. 515 at the top of the hill. Please have all orders back to us by January 26th for delivery on February 9th.

  3. Some of our Elementary/Middle kids have used up all of their toothpaste, so please replenish their supplies please! We have been sending home notes but we still haven't seen replacements sent in. Help us to keep your kids' teeth healthy!

  4. Make sure your children - INCLUDING Elementary/Middle kids - have replacement clothing here at school, especially during the winter with wet snow, mud, accidents, etc. Cold, wet bodies mean cranky kids!

  5. Next Wednesday, our friend and humane educator, Miss Jan, will come to the Elementary/Middle classroom to discuss a wonderful subject - RATS!!! I have just released our scripts for our play this year and you got it! RATATOUILLE! Since our theme is "We Are What We Eat," I felt that this play would be the best because I like the inherent theme in the movie, which is, "Anyone can cook," and also they talk about the fact that we are what we eat in the play! Seedlings do not perform in this play, but most of the Sprouts will be, you guessed it - rats - so costumes will be easy this year! Parents are responsible for obtaining/making all costumes, so get your thinking caps on since May comes around so quickly! I will send a final character list as soon as I finalize everything and then you can plan your child's costume. More information will come soon!

  6. The week of January 23rd is School Choice Week. We love celebrating this week because we are so thankful that all of you made the choice to send your child here to Fields of Green. For that we are always thankful, and we, along with your kids, celebrate by inviting you to breakfast here at FOG on January 25th from 9:30 to 11. The kids become your waiters, waitresses and cooks as they serve you as if you are in a restaurant! This also fits in with our play, since it takes place in a restaurant. We won't have rats cooking your food, though. More info is to come, but please mark your calendars for that morning so your child can serve you breakfast.

  7. Since Monday is a holiday, I want to remind all Ski Club members to make sure to bring your ski gear and to dress properly on Tuesday when we come back!

Have a great weekend! Miss Deb
